At national level, in hospitals, research centers, teaching institutions, technical medical schools and in other institutions there is a great need for specialists in the field of biomedical engineering. In order to address this demand, coherent educational programs in biomedical engineering are required.
Professional training in biomedical engineering must rely on modern engineering curriculum as well as focus on the specific aspects of biomedical engineering. This approach complies with the national objective of integrating in the European academic and professional policies and structures.
A significant role is played by the Romanian Society for Medical Engineering and Biological Technology both in promoting medical engineering in Romania and in the education and training of those passionate about science and medical engineering. In this field, higher education started in 1997 when the Medical Technology speciality was founded within the Faculty of Electronics of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Since then, similar educational programs have been established also in other Technical Universities in our country.
SNIMTB organized a series of activities (mainly scientific), such as:
- International Conference „Advancements of Medicine and Health Care through Technology – MediTech”, 2007 – 1st edition. The most recent edition of this conference was the 7th edition, MediTech2020 (13 – 15 October 2020).
- Workshop “The use of ANSYS-CKX software in medical applications,” – March 2008 (Andrew Narracot, PhD UK)
- The Board of the Society decided in 2009 to reduce by 50% the membership fee for the year 2010 for people younger than 35, in order to increase their activity the Society.
- In January 2009, SNIMTB applied for becoming a member of IFMBE and was accepted.
